About Southeast Regional Airport Authority:

Moving Forward While Honoring Our Heritage and Tradition

Our History

This airport has been a staple in the region since it began in 1942 as Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base. From 1942-1945 it was the largest Waco CG-4A glider pilot training base in the world.

Looking Forward

While we remain true to our heritage and traditions, we also look forward to ensuring the airport and its offerings continue to bring value to our customers and the community through exemplary service and diverse amenities for industrial, private, and military aviators as well as others.

See this Wikipedia page for air base history and this one for airport history.

Relationship With Community

Our team members live in the area and most of us were raised right around the corner. When you’re here, you’re in our hometown and we want you to experience the best it has to offer.

Our Team

When the army base shuttered in 1945, the Department of Defense granted the airport and facilities to the city of Laurinburg and the town of Maxton.

The two municipalities formed a commission to manage and direct the operation of the airport and its surrounding land for the next several decades. The commission was composed of three appointed representatives from each municipality.

In 2020, legislation was introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly that changed the former Laurinburg-Maxton Airport Commission to the Southeast Regional Airport Authority. In addition to three representatives from the City of Laurinburg and three from the Town of Maxton, Scotland County was given one representative, and the Director of Scotland County Economic Development Corporation was given a seat on the board as an ex officio member.
